Position Summary: 

NDWA is recruiting for an experienced Senior Director of Finance. The Senior Director of Finance will set the Alliance’s financial direction in conjunction with the Management Team, while also being an active participant in the organization’s overall strategy. They will oversee all financial administration, budgeting, revenue projections, nonprofit compliance and financial risk management of the organization as well as that of an affiliated 501(c)4 and a charitable LLC subsidiary. As a member of the Management Team, the Senior Director of Finance will work closely with NDWA’s senior leadership team and an engaged board of directors to implement the financial vision of the organization. This person will collaborate with the Controller in the preparation of financial reports and manage the overall Finance Team.

Responsibilities: 

I. STRATEGY & LEADERSHIP

  • Partner with the Management Team to implement operational and personnel decisions;
  • Provide strategic recommendations on financial growth based on financial analysis and projections and organizational fiscal policies and needs;
  • Oversee the organization’s financial planning process including: budgeting, cash flow, grant expenditures and policy matters;
  • Liaise with the board and serve as the point of contact for the audit and finance committee; effectively communicate and present critical organizational financial matters with the Board of Directors and maintain continuous lines of communication with the NDWA’s senior leadership.

II. FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT

  • Oversee budgeting, and the implementation of budgets, so as to monitor progress and present financial performance metrics both internally and externally;
  • Completes cash flow and revenue projections and forecasting;
  • Manage the preparation and approval of all financial proposals, reporting materials, and metrics for foundations and other donors, including organizational and program budgets, reports, and budget narratives;
  • Allocate resources according to organizational needs and priorities, and appropriately track expenditures against budgets;
  • Oversee and manage the financial relationship between the c3, c4 and LLC, including intercompany transfers, daily accounting operations, and other matters;
  • Work with Deputy Directors to ensure that Team Leads understand and manage their budgets;
  • Oversee NDWA’s investment portfolio and act as liaison with investment brokers, ensuring accurate recording of all gains and losses, and investment expenses;
  • Prepare and communicate monthly and annual financial statements in collaboration with the Controller;
  • Ensure that finance staff maintain financial records systems in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and monitor the use of all funds;
  • Coordinate all audit activities and form 990 preparation for all entities.

III. RISK MANAGEMENT

  • Ensure NDWA is compliant with financial nonprofit regulations including tracking of lobbying expenditures and staff time, c4 administration, and business registrations;
  • Provide support to NDWA’s leadership teams including development of internal management reporting capabilities;
  • Manage NDWA’s financial and investment risk management, planning and mitigation strategies.
  • Other financial duties as needed.
Job Requirements: 
  • Advanced degree in business or finance; CPA preferred, but not required
  • Proven track record of success in a senior management role in an organization with a budget of $10 million or more
  • Familiarity with nonprofit finance and accounting regulations
  • General agreement with NDWA’s values and goals and the desire to work in a non-profit dedicated to social change
  • Strong Excel, mathematical, analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Strong mentoring and coaching experience to a team, staff, and board with diverse levels of expertise
  • Energetic, flexible, collaborative, and proactive
  • A team leader who can positively and productively impact both strategic and tactical operations initiatives
  • Exceptional written and oral, presentation skills and the ability to effectively interface with senior management, NDWA’s board of directors, and staff
